Generic Viagra

What is it used for?

Generic Viagra is applied in men with erectile difficulty for restoring the ability to achieve and maintain erection of sufficient hardness. Generic Viagra remains active for 4 hours, during which erections can be achieved after short recovery periods.

Pharmacological characteristic

Sildenafil citrate, the active substance in generic Viagra, is a vasoactive agent of considerable potential. In simple English, it means that sildenafil expands the walls of blood vessels, making them more elastic. This is achieved thanks to the vascular activity of nitric oxide (NO), which is released as phosphodiesterase type 5 is blocked (inhibited) by Viagra. This is a very abbreviated description of what is happening in the male body under the influence of generic Viagra, but hopefully it will give you an idea of how the drug helps to restore erectile potential through fostering blood circulation in the genital area.

Doses and application

Generic Viagra is available in doses of sildenafil 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. The right dose should be appointed by a board-certified doctor responsible for your treatment. The treatment usually starts with the lowest dose which then can be stepped up if needed, given that the patient’s tolerance is adequate. Never increase the recommended dose. In case of severe or lasting side effects, dose revision is necessary.

Possible interactions with other drugs

Taken in combination with nitrates (medicines prescribed in case of attack of angina pectoris, heart failure or infarction), generic Viagra can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure. Why? Because it potentiates their hypotensive action.

Other drugs one is not supposed to take sildenafil alongside with are:

  • anti-fungal drugs
  • anti-HIV/AIDS drugs
  • certain antibiotics
  • alcohol

Use with caution

Taken in combination with nitrates (medicines prescribed in case of attack of angina pectoris, heart failure or infarction), generic Viagra can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure. Taken in the absence of any clinically proven erectile dysfunction, generic Viagra may result in a longer and more lasting erection. But beware, there could be a risk of priapism (a condition that is characterized by an erection abnormally long (at least two hours), painful and does not give rise to ejaculation). It is also contraindicated in case of “unstable cardiac state” that may increase the risk of heart attack. Generic Viagra can cause several side effects, especially after the first shots. Among the most common there are: headache, feeling of warmth, redness of the face, tension disorders, fainting, nosebleeds, hearing problems.

Contraindications

Do not take generic Viagra in the presence of the following conditions:

  • Problems with kidney, liver, stomach or duodenum
  • Degenerative eye or retina diseases
  • Unstable blood pressure (too high or too low)
  • Penile scarring or penile deformity
  • The history of priapism (abnormally lasting or painful erections)

Side effects

Following the intake of generic Viagra, the following fleeting side effects may occur:

  • Facial flushing
  • Headache
  • Stuffy / runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Stomach upset
  • Skin rash

If you experience any of the following, seek medical help immediately:

  • Increased heartbeat rate
  • Pain in the chest or arm
  • Facial swelling

Toxicity

Taken by millions of men, generic Viagra can be very effective, but also dangerous if used incorrectly. This is the case of a 31 year old American who after ingesting a large amount of sildenafil citrate has developed persistent retinal toxicity. “The 30-year-old now (and forever) sees life in red,” reports Mount Sinai Ophthalmology Department in New York for Retinal Cases. According to reports by the patient, “the problem occurred shortly after he took sildenafil citrate purchased on the internet to relieve his erectile dysfunction.” But the man would not have read and respected the dosage of the drug and instead of using the recommended dose, he abused it. One should must remember the importance of respecting the dosages of each treatment even if the desire to see the effectiveness of the drug is tempting.
